The premium lab initiates electrical repairs based on fire safety audit. The facility saw 14 accidents during last 15 years. Short circuit alone caused Rs 7.48 crore loss out of total loss of Rs 7.84 crores.
Anytime is better than ignoring.
The facility needs appreciation for taking up fire safety audit and initiating measures.

Fire in an eatery kills 8 - Times of India's report
As per the reports in Times of India, 8 persons died due to fire from possible short circuit and subsequent fireball from leaking gas in an eatery.
During fire, the stairs leading to eatery in upper floor gave way, trapping the persons in it.
It is found that this eatery does not have any permission for that floor from municipal and also NOC is not obtained from fire authorities.
The manager is charged with culpable homicide not amounting murder. If proven, maximum punishment of life term is possible.

Infrared thermography - use it to know about impending electrical fire in your place
Yesterday (14.12.2012) there was an article in The Hindu, about infrared thermography and its use to detect heating of electrical systems at the point of electrical cable input joints due to over load, loose contacts, improper wiring, etc. The heat emitted is read by the portable device and temperature is displayed to decide about whether it is within or above the limits. I also heard earlier from my colleagues that wall mounted thermography devices are also available to monitor continuously about critical electrical systems.
As most of the fire mishaps are attributed to electrical short circuit (more than 40%) that led to loss of lives, property damage, use of infrared thermography for electrical safety inspections in residential buildings, shops, public places, etc will help in saving us from the perils of fire.
For a long time, I had this question in mind about knowing the health of electrical wiring in my apartment. Fires in apartments, multi storey buildings endanger human lives of all and one should check about electrical safety aspects in the building.
From my electrician, I found that generally, the wiring lasts for 15-20 years, though industrial wiring lasts for more than 30 years as per information from colleagues in power supply department. However, these are theoretical and based on experience limited to specific conditions.
As the author in his article mentioned, over loading is a reason for electrical fires. Wiring gets deteriorated quickly under excess loads and the general information about life of electrical cable can't be applied universally. And, it is human tendency to add electrical loads with or without knowledge about electrical safety. At least at home front, it is the lack of knowledge on electrical safety that keeps people to add electrically operated kitchenware, electronics, etc. Tripping of MCBs will not lead to thinking by the residents for reasons, and instead, they just put it back and resume with the work.
And, in factories, it is the greed to prolong till it breaks without understanding or may be underestimating the costs to be incurred in case of fire. It is good that insurance companies are giving a thought to electrical safety audits. In many of my posts in this blog and in my comments in newspaper websites, I stressed upon the role of government agencies, regulators and insurance companies for enforcing electrical safety audit without which heavy premiums, penalties and punishments should be the order of the day. Only then, everybody will become aware of electrical safety and other issues and save themselves from fire mishaps and its consequences.
As mentioned in the article, there is company called CSR Impex Private Limited (C.Vidyasagar Reddy, Ph: 040-65212780, 9440066907) which is involved in use of this technology for the past ten years to inspect electrical panels of various establishments, especially software companies. (I did not check with the company but as I believe in electrical safety audits to know the healthiness of electrical systems, I thought that I can reproduce this information appeared in the newspaper for use by all).

Fire in a pharma company - same short circuit reason
In an incident of fire and explosion in a pharma company in the early hours on 09.10.2012, waste solvent drums, diesel drums, generator, cables, etc got burnt leading to a loss of about Rs. 2.0 crores. Window panes in and in neighboring plants were shattered due to the blasts. The reason cited is same as in many fire incidents, that is, of short circuit. A good electrical job would have not cost Rs 2.0 crores that was lost in the fire. Keeping all combustibles at one place is not a recommended practice.
Experts say that the cost of preventing an accident is nominal compared to the loss arising out of accidents and still we allow accidents to occur.

Short circuits main cause of fire - is it so?
It is reported that 45% of the fire accidents in Hyderabad are due to short circuits and another 31% are due to lighted cigarette butts. As rightly pointed out by Addl Director of Disaster Response and Fire Services department, people tend to buy cheap quality electrical cables and equipment for buildings resulting in early damage leading to such fire incidents. It is common for investigators to conclude majority of fires to short circuit but the root cause lies in use of improper electrical wiring, switches, and other electrical fittings. Also, people fail to ensure checking the healthiness of cables and others in their building and one should remember that even the best will not come for life. It should be made mandatory to check the healthiness of electrical systems after first 15 years and thereafter once in every five years. It is better to change electrical fittings at regular periodicity, say once in 15 or 20 years. Insurance companies should not pay any compensation if the fire is due to short circuit and they should insist on certificate for healthiness of electrical systems before renewing the policies.

No emergency doors - 2 die in a pharma fire
In a fire in a pharma factory two persons were charred to death. One of the died persons is a partner in the company. The incident occurred on a sunday evening. The fire resulting from a reactor explosion spread to neighboring areas. The fire was brought under control after five hours of struggle by fire services. It is said that the absence of emergency escape doors led to the deaths of the two persons. The deaths were identified only when the two did not return home and the police went to the factory and saw the skeletons. As usual, the reason stated for explosion is electrical short circuit.
As per Factory Rules, there should be atleast an emergency exit for every 22.5 m (75 feet) distance and the exit doors should open outward. There should not be any stairs immediately outside the emergency doors. These doors should not be locked and the escape routes should be free from any obstruction. The exit routes should be clearly identified and marked. The routes should be illuminated sufficiently.
Generally, we see the fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, emergency escape routes locked or blocked or covered thus making it a life and death question in times of emergency.

A fire incident

A fire incident was reported which caused property loss of Rs 2-3 crore as per some reports. Other reports mention the loss at much higher level. The cause stated is short circuit during testing of electrical equipment. Others say it is due to sparks from welding in the area that is full of flammables. The fire spread through cables to nearby area. No injuries are reported.
Generally, for any fire incident any where, it is common to attribute short circuit as the reason. Most of the time, the actual reason will be different.
If welding sparks are the reason, then before welding, one should check for presence of flammables atleast 15 m in the surrounding area as it is stated by experts in the field that weld sparks can fly about 15 m distance and can cause damage. If removal of flammables is not possible within this distance, then atleast they should be covered with fire resistant covers. If this is also not possible, worst case, ensure such hot works to be done only in the direct presence of Fire Service crew.

Safety of cockroach killing sprays
Last week, my wife was in the kitchen and suddenly she shouted for help. I ran to her only to see that she is in a state of shock. Later, I was told that the gas burner was lit for cooking. After seeing few cockroaches nearby, she sprayed the killing chemical from the container around the cockroaches. Immediately, the spray caught fire from the gas burner and the flame came towards her. She turned off the burner knob and went into shock. I never thought that spray will be within flammable limits and this taught me a lesson.
Earlier, few years ago, when I sprayed the same chemical for killing cockroaches, over the electrical switch board and also inside the electrical winding section of kitchen mixie and then switched ON the electrical point, the MCB tripped in the house. Without understanding the reason, I set it ON and again switched ON in the kitchen. This time MCBs tripped at home as well as at the LDB in the ground floor of our apartment complex, from where power cables are drawn to my residence. Then, I set it ON. Next, when I switched ON the mixie, there was burning smell from it. Then only it occurred to me that the spray caushed short circuit and lead to tripping of MCBs and coil burning.

Most cited reason for fires - Short Circuit
Most of the times I read news papers on fire incidents, the reason told by the owner of the premises or security or fire service department or some one on the road is that it is SHORT CIRCUIT.
Every time I read such a statement and learned people say short circuit is the cause for fire and resultant loss of lives and property, following questions come to my mind.
1. Why not people have a look at electrical wiring / cabling in their building.
2. Why not authorities make it compulsory by way of legislations that electrical audits of buildings by authorized people shall be mandatory? After such audit, the certificate shall be filed along with property tax payment?
3. Such authorized persons must be held responsible once they certify that the building under audit, if declared safety from electrical short circuit hazard is safe, is subjected to fire by short circuit.
4. If the electrical cabling during audit is found to be not satisfactory, then, it should be repaired / replaced within specified period by the auditor (say one or two months). If not, then local town authorities should impose penalty and if not paid, then services like water, electricity, etc shall be disconnected.
5. The vendors of such poor quality cables, switches, etc should be punished by penalties and if repeated, then be imprisoned.
6. Similarly, those who do cabling works should be held responsible, if the fires are due to poor workmanship of such people.
7. Like in industries where it is mandatory to display line diagrams of cabling, same should be made mandatory even for all residential and commercial buildings.
What I feel sometimes is that the short circuit reason is only for showing some reason and claim insurance. Claims should not be settled until the cause is found after due investigation by certified agencies.
The fires caused not only damage the property under fire but also that of others nearby and these buidlings residents have to face hardship because of others, let it be intentional or unintentional.

i) either the person has learned from earlier incident or
ii) he is doing intentionally to coverup something.

Else, the property tax shall be increased to such an extent that people should go for audit rather than paying enormous amounts of property tax with penalties for not doing elctrical and fire safety audits.
