As per the reports from various news papers, it appears that the material is combustible, volatile (vapour release), improperly packed, taken in large quantities, persons are inside a material handling lift, ignition source (spark) is present and trapped persons were unable to escape.
What can be done to prevent such accidents in our workplace?
- Lesser the better: Use small quantities for movement as the material is combustible.
- Packing and sealing: Pack the material in containers with inert or other gas (if it can be used without affecting product quality) and seal properly.
- Containers: Use anti-static containers.
- Design: Provide flameproof fittings in the lift and other areas where flammable material are handled/stored.
- Size the lift: Use material handling lifts (box type) like those used in restaurants/eateries where kitchen and customer sitting place are at different floors. Or, if possible use bucket type transfer system.
- Control: Do not permit movement of persons and (flammable/toxic) materials together in material handling lifts.
- Training: Train the persons about hazards of the materials handled, procedure for material movement and precautions to be taken. Ask questions to ensure that they understood what you said.
- Caution boards: Display warning signs on the containers, container handling equipment and lift entrance.
- Alarm: Provide emergency switch in the lift.
- Monitor: Provide CCTV camera in the lift to check for no movement of persons in the lift.
- Supervision: Ensure supervision.
- Drills: Conduct emergency exercises.
