A news item mentions about fall of woman from balcony and succumbing to injuries. Most of the builders construct balconies of height about (3 1/2 ft) which appear to be dangerous for tall persons. Though children and medium height persons (about 5 ft) may not be in danger, but taller persons when they lean on to the balcony of this height are likely to loose balance and fall.
Local authorities when giving permission for construction of any type of building should ensure by checking the drawings that the balcony height is maintained at least 5 ft. National Building Code also should be changed accordingly. The height of the balcony wall should be at least 4 ft and over that iron rods/bars cab be provided in to rows at 1/2 ft height each so that short people can have view at 4 ft high.
Though people do not pay much attention to these details while constructing houses/flats/commercial buildings, care should be taken to ensure these minor details.
